I write to you today with important news from the Study Abroad Foundation (SAF).
As you may know, since my retirement last year, I have remained close to SAF, serving as a consultant and providing input and insights on a variety of initiatives and projects.
As part of my ongoing involvement, I am very pleased to let you know that with the merger of SAF and IES Abroad now complete, a number of important steps have been taken to provide your university and your students with a host of new benefits from SAF.
In the months ahead, you and your students will realize more opportunities to study abroad, enhanced learning experiences while abroad, a new web site for SAF, enhanced print and online information regarding SAF programs, and expanded student services. These improvements are all the result of our merger with United States-based, not-for-profit, IES Abroad.
In addition, we have taken strides to strengthen the support SAF provides its partner universities in China, as well as to our Western university partners. As part of this mission, I want to introduce you to several new individuals at SAF, who bring extensive knowledge of and experience with the Chinese and Western university systems.
I am pleased to introduce Zhao Ning, who will serve as Director of SAF in China. Zhao Ning brings a wealth of experience to this position, having worked closely with U.S. and Chinese institutions of higher education over her long career.
Prior to her role as Director of SAF in China, Zhao Ning served as the Center Director of IES Abroad’s Beijing study center, working closely with Beijing Foreign Studies University, as well as numerous United States universities and U.S. students. Prior to Zhao Ning’s work as the IES Abroad Beijing Center Director, she taught Chinese business at Bucknell University and advised Chinese students, developing a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Chinese students on U.S. campuses.
In the past year, I had the opportunity to travel with Zhao Ning, with the two of us visiting a number of our Chinese university partners. I was most impressed with her knowledge, enthusiasm, and commitment to Chinese students and their home universities. I believe you will be equally impressed.
I encourage you to read Zhao Ning’s biography, which is attached to this email. I also encourage you to contact Zhao Ning at firstname.lastname@example.org, should you have any questions regarding SAF or IES Abroad. Zhao Ning will be visiting many of you in the coming months, and she is very much looking forward to working closely with you.
Supporting Zhao Ning from SAF’s US headquarters will be Carol Carmody, Executive Director, and Amber Mercier, Vice President for Strategy, New Business Initiatives, and Analytics.
Carol has served with SAF since its founding more than fifteen years ago. During that time, SAF has helped almost 10,000 students study abroad, with Carol playing a critical role in each and every student’s experience. Carol oversees a team of employees based in the United States that works to place students with host institutions abroad, and ensures the students have the proper guidance and support they need while studying abroad with SAF.
Amber Mercier has worked in the international education field for almost fifteen years in a number of capacities. Most recently, she has worked closely with SAF since its initial affiliation with IES Abroad in December of 2015. Amber has been working with SAF to identify operational developments that can improve the level of service that SAF provides to its students, parents, and partner institutions in China and around the world.
Additionally, effective September 24, 2017, Daniel Shen no longer serves SAF in any capacity. You should not receive any emails from Daniel or from his SAF email account. If you do, please contact Zhao Ning.
As you can see, much is happening at SAF. All this activity has been undertaken with one goal in mind – to ensure that your students enjoy the finest study abroad experiences possible. With SAF and IES Abroad now one organization, sharing knowledge, experience and resources, we believe SAF has never been more capable of meeting the growing internationalization needs of your university and your students.
Thank you for your support of SAF. In the weeks ahead you’ll hear and see more from SAF. And I truly believe you’ll understand why the future has never been brighter for your university and its students studying abroad on SAF programs.
